In February 2025, a new version of the international standard for anti-bribery management systems was published. ISO 37001:2025 will replace the previous version ISO 37001:2016. By February 28, 2027, all certified sites will need to have completed the transition to the new version. What is ISO 37001? ISO 37001 is a standard dedicated to establishing, implementing, maintaining, and improving an anti-bribery management system. This standard offers requirements and guidance for setting up systems designed to help organizations prevent, detect, and respond to bribery, as well as comply with anti-bribery laws and voluntary commitments applicable to their activities. It covers various forms of bribery (direct and indirect) within public, private, and not-for-profit sectors. Why is ISO 37001 important? Bribery is a pervasive issue that undermines societal, economic, and political structures, leading to injustice, distorted competition, and increased operational costs among other severe implications. ISO 37001 is critical as it provides organizations with a systematic approach to combat bribery. This approach is not only about legal compliance but also about fostering a culture of integrity, transparency, and trust within organizations. By implementing an anti-bribery management system, organizations can mitigate risks and damage associated with bribery, enhance their reputation, and ensure stable and fair market operations. What Has Changed in ISO 37001:2025 ISO 37001 – Anti-Bribery Management System was originally published in 2016 and has become a fundamental tool for organizations seeking to prevent, detect, and respond to bribery in their operations. It was recently updated, and below are the key changes introduced in ISO 37001:2025. The revision reflects the evolving business landscape, shaped by stricter regulatory demands, emerging bribery risks, increasing pressure for transparency, and the growing integration of themes such as sustainability and climate change into corporate governance. Changes to ISO 37001:2025 ISO 37001:2025 is the second edition of the international standard for anti-bribery management systems, revising the initial publication of the document from 2016. The revision went through the following changes of note: * subclauses were added on climate change and stressing the importance of the compliance culture * conflicts of interest were addressed * the concept of the anti-bribery function was clarified * the wording was harmonized with other standards where appropriate and reasonable * the latest harmonized structure was introduced This revision also incorporates an amendment to the standard from 2024 that related to climate change. |
